Well Boys and Girls Team Hurlburt and Hurlburt Paired up to take on a field of 52 teams in the gardens annual spring Walleye tourney. With Nate Hurlburt Runnin the boat and Tom Hurlburt doing the running commentary all day, there was plenty of Hurlburt Hot air to be found as you could imagine!! WHAT A DAY! we had a blast. we set out from my house at 4:50 am heading for the city off cass lake and a fairly formidable body of water known as PIKE BAY Lake. Shes a beast with a ton of structure and considering dad and i had never been on it before we knew we were taking a huge risk. but as i told mom and brianna the night before "this is one of those where you either hit a home run or you strike out miserably!" after talkin about it, dad and i decided that playing it safe in this tournament wasnt happenin we were goin for the win! well it turned out to be the windiest day of the summer yet! with gusts up to 30 MPH steady NW wind all day Battered us , even in my Warrior boat you could feel it! we fished our butts off all morning and at 12 noon we had only 3 walleyes to show for it. you could weigh up to 6 with only 1 over 20 inches. AND THAT IS WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON! Pops switched from a minnow to a lindy with a leech and i moved to crawlers and we proceeded to catch 12 walleyes in 1 hour and 35 minutes!!!!!!!!!! it was some of the best walleye fishin i have ever had. i cant speak for the old man but i think it has to rank up there! at 2 oclock we had 3 18 inchers 1 17 incher and 2 16 inchers to weigh and we were THROWIN SMALLER ONES BACK! our chalenge was this though....."we needed that 20+ inch kicker fish to win this son of a gun!" as dad put it. we fished hard still pulling in fish even on the last pass before we absolutely had to go..........but the big fish wasnt in our cards this day. we weighed in a 6 fish bag that weighed 10 lbs and 3 oz we threw 3 back and sent 6 home with pops for Ma and the rest of the family. Our final tally was 15 walleyes all ranging from 13 inches to 18 1/2 inches. one of us caught 8 walleyes and one caught 7 but we will never say who caught more!!! hahaha.
we finished in 12th place out of 51 teams and ended up 5 OZ!!!!!!!!! out of placing! as pop kept saying just one more big one! and realisticly a 20 - 22 incher might have done it!
What a day! this was one of the greatest tournament fishing experiences i have ever had and getting to do that with your dad as your fishing partner.........is something i will always remember! Team Hurlburt and Hurlburt rides again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
